Theta Chi Fraternity; Gamma Xi Chapter

Recap of Founders Day 2010

On April 10 a bunch of Gamma Xi undergraduates, along with alumni from a few different chapters, got together at South First Billiards in San Jose to celebrate Theta Chi’s founding in 1856. It was a great opportunity for the actives to see the alumni still know how to have  a good time, and shoot some mean stick.

Thanks to everybody who came out, and we hope to see even more of you next time.

Over 200 people enjoyed the tacos, beer and good times of the Gamma Xi tailgate before SJSU’s homecoming game against Idaho on Saturday, making it the biggest Gamma Xi alumni event in recent memory. A number of alumni came by the house beforehand to see how the place is holding up, specifically to check out the results of the capital campaign that’s raised some much-needed funds for the improvement of the house.

The actives and alumni from throughout Gamma Xi’s history for all-you-can-eat catered tacos and plenty of libations. The t-shirts were very popular and on display throughout the afternoon and into the evening as we supported the Spartans (who unfortunately lost when Idaho scored a go-ahead TD with 1 minute left…) and then met up at San Jose Bar & Grill after the game. Here’s a video, and a photo album is below.

Homecoming Tailgate Registration Now Open

The Gamma Xi Alumni board’s SJSU Homecoming ‘09 tailgate is coming together…all we need is you!

So please register right now!

Not sold? OK, here’s the situation and my plea…
The more we know about who is coming the better we can plan, so to encourage advance payment/registration we’re offering some sweet discounts and a special “All In!” package for those of you who buy the whole kit and kaboodle of tailgate food, beer, a t-shirt and your game ticket.

Here’s the math…
Tickets will set you back $25 if you buy them at the gate. Then our tailgate will cost you $10 for food, $10 for beer. (Still a good deal, mind you…) And you’ll definitely want one of the t-shirts we’re making, that’ll be $15. That’s $60 my friend! Our limited-time-offer “All In” package gets you all that for just $50 ($35 for kids) and you’ll get credit for a $20 donation to our 2009 capital campaign. Pretty sweet deal eh? (If you’re a friend of the chapter or alumni scene instead of a member or alumnus and want to give that credit to a friend, just say so in the comments.)

That do the trick?
Cool! Now please register now!

If you have any questions or suggestions please email greg@thetachisjsu.com.

Successful Founder’s Day ‘09

Over two dozen Gamma Xi alumni converged on the chapter house this past Saturday to celebrate the founding of Theta Chi Fraternity on April 10, 1856. They enjoyed noshing on authentically delicious tacos complements of the alumni board, meeting current actives and reconnecting with fellow alumni, and checking out the recent progress on the house.

On that last note, I’m proud to report that thanks to the support we’ve been getting in the form of contributions to the capital campaign and a renewed sense of pride in the house on the part of the actives, the house is looking better than it has in years. The deck is seriously stylin’, and the living room and upstairs halls are looking great thanks to a fresh coat of paint and some moulding.

You can see pictures of the event and chapter house here.

Capital Campaign Contributions
Special thanks also go out to all the alumni who contributed to the 2009 capital campaign while at the event, in particular Justin Border, Mike Leong for their contributions of $100 each and Adan Reynoso who turned his pockets inside out to kick down all $56 he had on him. Also contributing to the cause were Alex Chavarria, Todd Bartz, Ned Laugharn, Jason Wilksinson, Quinn Honore, Tom Zizzo, Sunil Gundihara, Marcus Kong, Calvin Wang, Steve Pyle and Prat Amin.

Behind the Scenes
I want to thank alumni board president Micah Harrel who coordinated the food and drink even though he wasn’t able to attend himself. He’s got us hooked on the catering stylings of “Anytime is Taco Time” in a big way!

Founders Day BBQ on April 11, 2009

The alumni board and chapter will be hosting a founders’ day lunch at the chapter house from noon to 3:00.

Please mark your calendars, save the date and TELL A FRIEND!

More info as it becomes available…

More Info About All ’60s Reunion June 2009

Brothers, what has happened to your wingmen? Come to Reno and see the ones who can still fog a mirror! The big TC party will be at Steve Brennan’s house on Saturday, June 27th. We are reserving a block of rooms at a hotel from Thursday 6/25 through Saturday 6/27. The hotel is just a short walk to Brennan’s house overlooking the Truckee River in Reno.

Reno is hosting Brewfest that weekend. You can buy a bottomless mug for a few bucks – and refill it with suds from micro-breweries.

More details later. For now mark your calendars, and pass the word to brothers who were actives in the SJSC house during the 1960’s. Please register your interest in participation by calling Ron Smith at (775) 230-0642 or emailing him at smithistry(at)aol(dot)com.

Homecoming ‘08 Tailgate; Summary and Pics

The Theta Chi 2008 Homecoming tailgate was a huge success, with over 50 paid attendees and dozens more alumni stopping by just to hang out for a bit. We had guys from all eras enjoying each other’s company (along with the beer provided by brother Dave Coburn and professionally made-to-order tacos) before heading in to enjoy San Jose State’s pounding of Utah State. Here’s a few pictures to save me from typing thousands of words. (The only pics I have so far are totally 90’s centric, so if you were there and got pictures of the 60s, 70s, or 80s guys that were in attendance, send ‘em to me at gregbarr23@yahoo.com.)

The chapter sold over 60 of the awesome blue and yellow shirts you see in lots of these pictures. A preview of the artwork is shown here. The shirts will soon be available as appreciation gifts for alumni that contribute to the 2009 capital campaign.

Homecoming is 10/11

I hope you’ve got a circle around Saturday 10/11 for SJSU Homecoming. In addition to being a hell of a fun day, it’s an important one: the morning of the game is the annual alumni board meeting and elections. We have a good group of guys working hard right now, but need to bring in some fresh blood for new ideas and to share the workload, etc.

Please do your best to join us, and if you have any questions, let me know.

Here’s the agenda:
9:00 to 11:00 — Alumni board meeting at the chapter house
11:00 to 12:00 — Open house at the chapter house
12:00 to 4:30 — Alumni tailgate by the Stadium
4:30 to 8:00 — Football game vs. Utah State
